Common questions
Filing accounts explained
What changed with the April 2025 micro-entity threshold?
From April 2025, the FRS 105 micro-entity threshold increased to turnover ≤ £1m and net assets ≤ £500k (from £632k and £316k). Around 400,000 additional companies now qualify for the simplified regime, meaning a two-column balance sheet only — no P&L, no notes. If you were previously filing FRS 102, accounts.law will automatically flag that you may now qualify for the simpler route.
What is iXBRL and why does it matter?
iXBRL (inline XBRL) is the machine-readable tagging format required by Companies House and HMRC. Every financial figure must be tagged using the FRC Taxonomies 2023 (UK GAAP). accounts.law generates valid iXBRL automatically — you never see the XML. We validate before submission.
When are my accounts and CT600 due?
For a private limited company: statutory accounts at Companies House within 9 months of your accounting reference date. CT600 at HMRC within 12 months of your accounting period end. CT payment 9 months and 1 day after the accounting period end. Your first accounts are due 21 months after incorporation. accounts.law tracks all three deadlines automatically.
What happens if accounts are filed late?
Late filing penalties start at £150 for 1 day late and escalate to £3,000 for more than 6 months late. Second consecutive late year doubles every penalty. accounts.law sends reminders at 60, 30, 14, and 7 days before your deadline — and escalates to our QA team if no action is taken.
Can accounts.law detect R&D tax credit opportunities?
Yes. During the AI drafting process, accounts.law scans your SIC code, questionnaire responses, and expenditure patterns for indicators of qualifying R&D activity. If detected, you're automatically referred to rnd.law — the OS R&D claim specialist. The average SME R&D claim is £53,000.
I formed my company through form.law. How does this connect?
form.law automatically creates your accounts.law account at company formation. Your incorporation date, registered address, and SIC code are pre-populated. Your first accounts deadline (21 months from incorporation) is set on day one. No manual setup required.
File your statutory accounts. Auto-file your CT600.
